Nixon is remembered as the author of 'executive' privilege as a right to withhold information from Congress. This went to the Justice Department, and in an attempt to fix the process Nixon fired his attorney general. A special prosecutor was appointed by Congress, leading to the impeachment charges of 1974, and his resignation. McGovern, the 1972 Democratic presidential candidate, had the most overtly liberal platform in presidential major candidate history.
These men, one a disgraced president, the other a failed candidate, are now merged into one person, our current president. We are living in the worst failure of our governmental system, a crisis of conception that transcends party and platform. We are experiencing autocracy disguised as democratic process, fiat masquerading as law. And we are blandly accepting it with acquiescence by the Senate and, without action by Congress, no possible intervention by the Judiciary. Some of these illegal actions have a history that predates our current president, but most are acts of this administration, either without precedent or without prior extent.
Signing statements, which were once comments by the Executive on the meaning of a law signed by him, are now used to selectively enforce said law. We have overt statements that certain laws will not be enforced, orders to the Justice Department to ignore law. Recess appointments are made with Congress in session (these were mercifully invalidated by the courts). Extensive use has been made of 'regulatory authority' to enact rules obviously in contradiction to the action (or inaction) of Congress. The IRS has been used to attack political opponents. The last president to do this? Nixon, and he was castigated for it. Our Press say nothing about this. Military force is used with disregard for the recommendations of the military itself. It is used without seeking authorization from an overtly sympathetic Congress, claiming a more than 10 year old authorization is in effect.
The only possible interpretation of this last act is a desire to declare the Executive independent of Congressional authority. While the use of regulatory action has precedent, in light of the most recent acts it also can only be seen as arrogance transcending the democratic process. And all this to enact a liberal agenda not supported by Congress or its electors, the People, from whom all these powers are supposed to derive.Nixon's methods have been wedded to McGovern's agenda.
Our Constitution gave power sparingly to a Federal government, with most power in the hands of Congress, and all other powers reserved to the States and the People. Now we have an executive who circumvents the entire structure of our government to force an agenda not approved of by the voters through Congress. This is nothing less than Imperium, than autocracy. This is dictatorship disguised as democracy. Satan comes in the form of a gentleman, in this case a smooth-talking, inexperienced man who is a perfect prop to go unchallenged by a Press thrilled merely by his race and 'background'.
But the Executive can only force its will on the People if we refuse to speak, and our voice is to vote. Whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, a liberal or a conservative, white or black, it is unconscionable to vote to support this misuse of power by a President in the name of agenda and party. Any person who supports the force of law and our Constitution should vote Republican next month. That their party is as corrupted by desire for power is irrelevant. To vote democratic is to support by your voice your own emasculation, your own disenfranchisement.
Vote Republican. Anything else encourages the unconstitutional usurpation of your own power. Vote Republican even if you disagree with their agenda, in support of their process, and in opposition to extra-legal rule by fiat.
