Who We Are, and the Emperor's New Clothes

What a week. Romney continues to be asleep, and the MSM continue to engage not simply in grossly biased reportage but to simply make things up. This past week has seen the media not make an issue out of a Libya story that is just a lie, promote polls that are grossly oversampled for democrats, manufacture audio for a tape so that it makes Romney look like a fool and fail to report on Obama's overt support of wealth redistribution while making so much out of a fundraising dinner speech by Romney. Mercifully more than half of Americans no longer use radio or newspapers as their primary news source, although it is disturbing to think of how many use TV. You have to get on the internet and read widely to get any sense of truth. BBC is good for this, since they are a foreign station looking at the US. For a nice article about the press, go here.

Speaking of polls, take a look at this article and this one. Here's another, and more, and some more (a really good one). But this is the best one of all. The polls trumpeted by the MSM are oversampling Democrats not by a little, but are assuming the greatest Democratic turnout in history. And somehow this is not news for the MSM. Instead the outlandish results of these polls are made news. And Quinnipiac isn't even among the ones polling. You remember them. That is the organization that predicted a 5 point Kerry win in 2004. Look again at the article  about the predicting of a Carter win over Reagan. The articles are as late as October 23. And Carter lost by 10 points.

How long do we keep pretending that these organizations are reporting news? When do we have the Emperor's New Clothes moment, when we as a society collectively say 'this is just trash'?

And here is what the Fed is doing. While we read nearly pure fantasy our government is printing money to buy up debt so our interest rates are kept low. At a time of trillion dollar deficits.

So why am I ranting? Because if Obama wins we as a nation will have made a statement about ourselves. We will be saying to our media 'Thank you, I prefer palatable fiction over real information'. We will be saying to our government 'Thank you, I can't take care of my own life and I want a do-over when I screw up or something bad happens'. We will be saying 'Thank you, I like the image of prosperity built on debt over the reality of wealth and real security'. We will be saying 'I want that fake security more than I want to try and be independent and achieving'.

And as long as we continue to value success only as money then most people will continue to feel worthless and accept governmental security over the perceived emptiness of their own lives. That's a thought error we can all correct. There is dignity and achievement in anything done well, and measuring all of life and success by money is a dehumanizing trap.

If we re-elect Obama we will be agreeing with every one of the above false statements. Do you agree with them? Do you want them to be true? That is what we are voting about. Self-definition and societal definition. Democrats want to define Republicans as uncaring because we support a smaller government. It is Democrats who are truly uncaring because  they support the role of the government over the individual and foster envy of the wealthy rather than a valuing of the dignity of all people. It is Democrats who tell us that we must have more to be valued, must have more to be secure. And they will generate that more by taking it from others and giving it away through government. Now really, do you believe in that? All that does is degrade everyone.

Our vote is about who we are, and how we want to live. I hope people will think about that when they vote.

What is Forgiveness

In doing years of medical teaching, I have told students that teaching and learning are not directly related. I can teach and teach, but you may never learn. Conversely, you may learn continuously without me teaching you a thing. 'I teach' and 'you learn' are two separate, active processes that may overlap or coincide. The same is true of forgiveness. I am an unforgiving man. I am the very opposite of God, who is slow to anger and of great kindness. I am quick to anger and very slow to forgive. I'm kind and insightful with people generally, but when mistreated or insulted I am not kind at all, nor do I forget, or forgive.  The Bible tells us to do something else. We are told to forgive. In Matthew 18:21, Peter asks Jesus how often he should forgive his brother's sin. The Jewish standard was three times. Like the young man in the story of the Samaritan, who asks who his brother is in order to know to whom he should be loving, Peter appears to be asking for guida...

My Broken Tooth

I broke a tooth today. I've done that before; I inherited my mother's horrible teeth, and if not for crowns I would have the smile of any drug-addicted homeless man in the street. But the tooth broke, rather than the crown coming off. I've had that happen a couple of times, and it's nothing. After all, the tooth is just fake, held on by cements similar to the ones I use for my models. This time, however, I have to have the root extracted so I can get the modern version of a bridge. And this new dental experience has reduced to me to jelly, this not helped by the condescending, sexist comments of the dental assistant. I have a long, longe memory, my first recollections coming from age 2. I have well-developed, detailed memories from age 3 onward. I vividly recall being at the dentiswt as a child, when it was fashionable to fill baby teeth. I can recall being left there by my mother as a 14 year old, on the day I was paid for working as 'the 5th ace' at Camp Maga...

Politically Correct Dishonor

The Biblical prophets warned aloud that devastation would come to those who were unclean. Those that profaned God and the house of God, those who were drunken, fornicators, idolators, those that cheated, that gave unclean offerings. Israel was warned of the consequences of their behavior. And God did not punish Israel. Rather, by walking away from God, Israel simply suffered the consequences of its behavior and choices. I chose, I chose , to live, to receive a transplant. I struggled to have the surgery that prolonged my life, I accepted the gift of a kidney from a whole person that I might live. I was convinced by family and friends that I had some role in the world, something I might contribute. And I believed that. My idea of contribution was to teach, to give to others what I had learned to do. But I have lived to see injustice. To see self-interest and greed triumph over not merely right but reason as well. I see incompetence passed off as expertise, the mundane as the s...
