Party Differences

The recent little spate of fake hate crimes and other drivel has eld me to repost an item I received by email a couple of years ago. It is the difference between Republicans and Democrats-

If a Republican doesn't like guns, he doesn’t buy one.
If a Democrat doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a Republican is a vegetarian, he doesn’t eat meat.
If a Democrat is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a Republican is homosexual, he quietly leads his life.
If a Democrat is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.

If a Republican is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation. A Democrat wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a Republican doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels. Democrats demand that those they don't like be shut down.

If a Republican is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.
A Democrat non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced.

If a Republican decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.
A Democrat demands that the rest of us pay for his.

If a Republican reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh.
A Democrat will delete it because he's "offended".

Here is another item that excited a strong reaction from me on FB. It speaks for itself-

"Dear Red States,

We've decided we're leaving. We intend to form our own country, and we're taking the other Blue States with us. In case you aren't aware, that includes... Hawaii, California, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, New York, and all of the Northeastern states. After this election, we'll be adding Colorado and New Mexico. We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, especially to the people of our new country - Nuevo California.

To sum up briefly: You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states; we get stem cell research, the best beaches, and the best ski resorts. We get the Statue of Liberty; you get Dollywood. We get Intel and Microsoft; you get WorldCom. We get Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Cal Tech, MIT and Columbia; you get Ole' Miss. We get 85 percent of America's venture capital and entrepreneurs; you get Alabama. We get two-thirds of the tax revenue; you get to make the red states pay their fair share.

Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than that of the Christian Coalition, we get a bunch of happy families and you get a bunch of under-educated single moms.

Please be aware that Nuevo California will be pro-choice and anti-war, and we'll need all of our citizens back from Iraq at once.

If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They apparently have kids they're willing to send to their deaths for no purpose, and they don't mind if you don't televise their kid's caskets coming home. We do wish you success in Iraq and hope that those Weapons of Mass Destruction turn up for you, but we're not willing to spend any more of our money in Bush's Quagmire.

With the Blue States, we will control 80 percent of the country's fresh water, 90 percent of pineapple and lettuce, 92 percent of the nation's fresh fruit, 97 percent of America's quality wines (you can serve French wines at your state dinners), 90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, most of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias and condors, and all the Ivy League and Seven Sister schools. We also get New England, the Great Lakes and Yosemite, thank you very much.

In the Red States, you will have to cope with 88 percent of all obese Americans and their projected health care costs, 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, 100 percent of tornadoes, 94 percent of hurricanes, 99 percent of Southern Baptists, virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, and Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bob Jones University, and Clemson.

Additionally, in the Red States, 38 percent actually believe Jonah was swallowed by a whale; 62 percent believe life is sacred unless it involves the death penalty or gun ownership; 44 percent claim that evolution is only a theory; 53 percent insist that Saddam Hussein was involved in 9/11; and 61 percent of you crazy bastards believe you have higher moral standards than those of us on the left.

By the way, we're taking all the good pot, too. You get that dirt weed from Mexico and Kansas ditches."

Here is my reply, in similar style, but I hope not so arrogant or angry.

It is easy to make coarse generalizations about red and blue states. The 'experiment' in so-called blue state social values has played out rather poorly in England, also in France and Spain.

While trashing the 'red' states, how are those states chosen? Which presidential election, or perhaps local election? Do you want the blue counties, which would include all the big cities, but very few of their suburbs? Do you want to base the choice on 2008, 2004, or perhaps 1972? We could base it on governors, in which case 2/3 of the country is red.

The red states, even ignoring dividing into counties, would control almost all the grain supplies, as well as beef. Is the calculation of fresh water ignoring the Ogallala aquifer, which is by a mile the largest in the US, and all in 'red' states? Perhaps control of the Great Lakes ignores Ohio and Indiana, as well as senatorially 'split' states. Also, the Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio river systems are largely in red states. The water math really doesn't seem accurate.

If you really want to divide up the country, let's do it by voters. While making generalizations about population, if we do this by county presidential vote, the blue states get 91% of the black vote, including almost all the unemployed urbanites, and the black vote of Mississippi and Alabama. Those who voted republican can run their country on their money and values, and those who voted democratic can do the same. Doesn't look quite so good then. The dependency of red states on blue states taxes is often trumpeted. Who generates those taxes? Want to bet that more taxes are paid by Republicans than Democrats?

The post boasts of blue colleges. This conveniently ignores Vanderbilt, Duke, Emory, Baylor, Washington University, Virginia and other institutions which are every bit as intellectually sophisticated as the Ivies or Seven Sisters.

Speaking of productivity, the blue states get all the unionized workers, the ancient auto plants and the biggest state governments. They also get California, soon to be bankrupt, and New York, not exactly a paragon of governance. If we divide New York into red and blue counties, the blue ones are urban and heavily dependent on taxes from upstate, which is all red. And the red states get Texas, a model of financial stability, also Louisiana and most of the US oil industry. The red states get the biggest and most productive importation ports too. Know why? Because unionized labor contracts made the northeastern ports too expensive.

Perhaps the blue states should get the governmental programs their politicians supported, and the red states get the ones they supported. The blue states would have an awful lot of debt to cover very quickly, what with Obamacare and the COLA expansions of Social Security. The red states would get the Medicare drug benefit to pay for, but would impose restrictions on payments that would be fiscally sustainable.

You are absolutely right that the red states get Hannity, Boortz and other commentators of this ilk. The blue states get NPR, which is not financially sustaining. The red states get Fox network, with all its top rated shows, and control of by far the most popular internet and cable news. The blue states get CNN and MSNBC. The red states get the Wall Street Journal. The blue get the New York Times.

The post rightly says the blue states get the redwoods and sequoias, and Yosemite. Did you deliberately forget Yellowstone and Old Faithful? Why pick Dollywood, except to reveal prejudice? How about Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, or all of Florida? Also Hilton Head Island, Charleston and its surrounding islands.

And the blue states can call all their soldiers home, and the red states can pay for and fight for their values. You will find many more volunteers, and they are just that, coming from red than blue states, fighting for the blue states' right to laugh at them. Good luck taking care of yourselves without the defense from those whom you despise.

It is so easy to make intellectual and social issues dichotomous because we have two political parties. Those parties, like society itself, are sharply divided at this time. It does remind me of conditions leading up to the Civil War. It may be that we can not stand as a nation in these political conditions. There is no question at all, however, that mean-spirited, condescending material such as the above will get all of us nowhere.

In re-reading this what struck me was not simply the sour tone of Nuevo California. It is the falsity of the smug assumptions. It is said that the best way to emasure the desirability of a society is by how many people want to get nto it and how many want to get out. By that measure the Blue States are an impressive failure. People are leaving California, Pennsylvania and New York. Businesses have long since moved new plants and companies to the South to avoid unions and taxes. For example, the auto industry in the US has two parts. One is thriving in the South, the other has required gerrymandered bankruptcy to 'save' it in the North. California is near broke, its schools enar the bottom of performance in the US. Boeing opened its new plant in South Carolina, not Washington and everyone knows why.

Let's assume we were to split into two countries, letting states decide by plebiscite whether to be Red or Blue, and letting people and businesses migrate where they want to go, like India and Pakistan did. You would see a torrent of businesses and people move to Texas, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida, and a small stream of Buddhists, artists, homosexuals, atheists and government dependents migrate to New York and Illinois.

Now, which side of that movement do YOU want to be on? Which system do YOU want- one run by the people who create deficits instead of jobs and are liberal thought police, or one run by those who create jobs, let business operate and promulgate their own values without forcing you to say or believe anything?

Rigth. You know the answer. Go out and make it happen. Vote.

Ted

  1. The e-mail you received is insulting. It's an unfair description of Democrats. But I guess you'd have to be a Republican to agree with it. I'm so tired of BOTH sides! They can each back up their arguments with facts that they present to try and win the argument. This is one reason I try to remain quiet and not discuss politics because you just can't win when having these discussions. You are going to vote for who you want...or not vote at all.

  2. Thanks for your thoughts Elizabeth. The email was indeed insulting. Interestingly, the first was penned by a Republican and the second by a Democrat. Both have distortions and degrading things to say. You, like many, are tired of the campaign. Now that it is over it is time for us, US, to accept our election and government, and let it govern as we have chosen it to do.

  3. Don't know what happened here. I was trying to delete one of my comments since I posted 2 identical ones. Whoops! So I'll reply again. lol. As I said you are so right about so much. And I did lose a friend over the election. But you know what? Couldn't have been much of a friend to begin with. My husband and I voted differently and so did Meredith and I. But I didn't delete them from my life! We just kept our opinions to ourselves...or tried to. I just wish people would respect each others views and realize that we can agree to disagree.

What is Forgiveness

In doing years of medical teaching, I have told students that teaching and learning are not directly related. I can teach and teach, but you may never learn. Conversely, you may learn continuously without me teaching you a thing. 'I teach' and 'you learn' are two separate, active processes that may overlap or coincide. The same is true of forgiveness. I am an unforgiving man. I am the very opposite of God, who is slow to anger and of great kindness. I am quick to anger and very slow to forgive. I'm kind and insightful with people generally, but when mistreated or insulted I am not kind at all, nor do I forget, or forgive.  The Bible tells us to do something else. We are told to forgive. In Matthew 18:21, Peter asks Jesus how often he should forgive his brother's sin. The Jewish standard was three times. Like the young man in the story of the Samaritan, who asks who his brother is in order to know to whom he should be loving, Peter appears to be asking for guida...

My Broken Tooth

I broke a tooth today. I've done that before; I inherited my mother's horrible teeth, and if not for crowns I would have the smile of any drug-addicted homeless man in the street. But the tooth broke, rather than the crown coming off. I've had that happen a couple of times, and it's nothing. After all, the tooth is just fake, held on by cements similar to the ones I use for my models. This time, however, I have to have the root extracted so I can get the modern version of a bridge. And this new dental experience has reduced to me to jelly, this not helped by the condescending, sexist comments of the dental assistant. I have a long, longe memory, my first recollections coming from age 2. I have well-developed, detailed memories from age 3 onward. I vividly recall being at the dentiswt as a child, when it was fashionable to fill baby teeth. I can recall being left there by my mother as a 14 year old, on the day I was paid for working as 'the 5th ace' at Camp Maga...

Politically Correct Dishonor

The Biblical prophets warned aloud that devastation would come to those who were unclean. Those that profaned God and the house of God, those who were drunken, fornicators, idolators, those that cheated, that gave unclean offerings. Israel was warned of the consequences of their behavior. And God did not punish Israel. Rather, by walking away from God, Israel simply suffered the consequences of its behavior and choices. I chose, I chose , to live, to receive a transplant. I struggled to have the surgery that prolonged my life, I accepted the gift of a kidney from a whole person that I might live. I was convinced by family and friends that I had some role in the world, something I might contribute. And I believed that. My idea of contribution was to teach, to give to others what I had learned to do. But I have lived to see injustice. To see self-interest and greed triumph over not merely right but reason as well. I see incompetence passed off as expertise, the mundane as the s...
