I cannot tell you anything about Justin Bieber the celebrity. He is the type of pop performer whose performances, music and fan reactions occur in a dimension to which I do nto belong. Every once n a while an item slips through. He is apparently a drummer, among other things. Today I read a couple of items about him being something else. He is a bad neighbor.
Bieber lives in The Estates of The Oaks, in Calabasas, about 23 miles outside of Hollywood. As the name implies, he does not live in a typical neighborhood. His is the gated, special section of an already expensive and exclusive neighborhood. The town is known for offering privacy and quiet for celebrities of various sorts. His neighborhood charges 1000.00 per resident monthly for security and street cleaning. Bieber's home cost 6.5 million dollars. The decimal point on his home cost is more than my home is worth.
Into the area of wealth and privacy moves....a 19 year old pop star. He has friends who are.....19-22 years old. He drives.....a Ferrari! His friends are rappers and various other such types. Bieber smokes pot, has loud parties all night long, has spat in the face of one neighbor, and now two of his friends have been caught on tape speeding through the neighborhood and throwing f-bombs at a woman who taped their behavior. Bieber has roared past a resident's child playing outdoors. He terrorizes gardeners and other service staff, he frightens children, driving 50+ mph in a white Ferrari 458 Italia.
This disgusts but does not surprise me. Bieber is worth 110 million dollars, He is 19 years old. Generally it takes years to acquire this much net worth, and it is based on brilliance, or deep knowledge, or a successful business. By the time most people have this kind of money they also have sophisitication, or at least an understanding of the importance of restraint in public. Our entertainment industry's practice of promoting young teens as 'stars' leads to these immature and inexperienced individuals having a great deal of wealth and no adult supervision, but insufficent experience to behave well.
So I am not surprised. Bieber has no formal education, no special sophistication and lots of money. He doesn't udnerstand the manners and consideration expected in the community where he lives. He is aking the choices of an ignorant person suddenly endowed with money- drugs, fast cars, rudeness stemming from a narcissistic belief in hsi own achievement and importance.
Unfortunately in the modern United States simply earning a lot of money is a status symbol, is an achievement in itself. A wealthy seller of confetti for parties is more admired than a judge making 1/10th the money, or than a physicist doing complex research. Bieber's adolescent narcissism and self-indulgence are thus fanned by a society that fawns on him as if he had achieved something of importance, furthering his narcissism and bad behavior. And the flaunting of society's unwritten rules of behavior makes Bieber 'cool'. He's so daring. he can blow off society and get apid millions for it by the very society he purports to despise. A hypocrite and a thief as well as a narcissist.
People like this, like Britney Spears, like Taylor Swift, etc, need the equivalent of an adult guardian. Someone is needed to restrain their money-fuled indulgence and flaunting of societal rules. Sadly law says these people are independent at 18. And this is what we get.
For those who inherit great wealth they typically have no independent control over that wealth, usually in a trust fund, until they are 25. Not 21, and not 18. I wish that labels signing up these children and then 'molding' (read altering) them into stars would have as part of the contract a provision that they get an allowance of 100,000.00 yearly until age 25. Only then would they control their own money. The money would be kept in trust with a banker, a company producer and a parent as trustees.
That, like restricting 18 year olds from playing in the NBA, is considered inappropriate. And so we are treated to overpaid and undertrained children playing basketball, and hyped and undertalented children churning out pop trash songs no one will remember.
I hope Bieber's neighbors make politely plain that he is unwanted. They are not paying their nieghborhood expenses. Next comes evidence, like the tape. But watch out Bieber. because next is a big, fat suit. And bad publicity. And our 'stars' can buy ther way out of trouble but not bad publicity.
Bieber either needs to behave or get out.
